Formation of stones in the kidneys or urinary tract is a frequent problem, affecting as many as 5-10% of the American population. They develop when substances like calcium oxalate, or phosphate, uric acid, or magnesium phosphate are too concentrated in the urine. Eventually the precipitate out, forming crystals that combines to form stones. Fortunately there are some things you can do to help lower your risk of forming the stones to begin with. First and foremost, drink lots of water! Other things that can help are to cut back on caffeine, go easy on sugar, avoid phosphoric acid found in sodas, avoid high-oxalate foods like chard, rhubarb, beets, spinach, parsley, coffee, cocoa, and black tea. Take extra magnesium (200-400mg per day) and increase the amount of fiber in your diet. Drink 4 ounces of lemon juice per day. It is a very inexpensive form of citrate and will help increase urinary citrate levels and increase urinary calcium excretion. If you are prone to forming stones then our kidney blend will help to reduce the risk even more. It includes juniper berries which increases urinary volume, uva-ursi which is an anti-bacterial, anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic. Licorice root which is an intestinal healer, a blood purifier, an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and a transporting agent. Stinging nettle which has been shown to decrease uric acid, and dandelion root which is also a diuretic but also increases potassium levels which are easily lost with increased urination, I and it also increases metabolic waste.
